Somewhere in America is a project initiated by artist Nancy Hwang to explore the United States. The current state of our nation asks for reflection, and visiting unfamiliar places with new people hopes to inspire a broader look at who we are.
Twelve distinct trips within the U.S.—determined by a contest that invites us to contemplate the numerous places in America—will help form a portrait of the U.S. Publications and discussions around Somewhere in America, along with shared entries on this site, will ask: Where are we and where do we want to go?
A note from Nancy for contest entrants:
I’ve spent the recent half of my life in New York City, but lived in various other parts of the U.S. and the planet before that. I’ve traveled on three continents to produce art projects that encourage people to engage with others.
I aim to be an open minded travel partner. Serious about both safety and fun, I want to make the most out of our trip. In traveling with a companion, I will be respectful and sensitive in finding the right balance of activity, down time, conversation and quiet time.
I’m eager to know firsthand what our country is like today, and I’m excited to learn about you and discover a journey worth taking together.
